BELGAUM: Is the civic body not responding to your complaints and problems? Then, self-reliance is the best policy —-as residents of Hanumannagar II Stage here shown the way. The residents have not only solved civic problems, but also set an example that resident associations can change the look of the neighbourhood if they united and strove for development.
Hanumannagar II Stage, is one of the posh localities here, where VIPs and affluent people live, but the area is also beset with civic problems, such as,non-maintenance of drains by the Belgaum City Corporation. Garbage heaps at road intersections and other places are a common sight now. Residents approached BCC with representations, but to their dismay, the civic body not only ignored their petitions, but also failed to outline the steps it would take to solve them. This left the residents with no choice but to form an association and get solve the problems on their own.
The idea caught the fancy of many and today the association proved that people can solve their problems on their own if the civic body was unresponsive to their needs. More than 110 residents led by Dr Vinay Dastikoppa formed the association and began implementing the works in the locality. Curie Rodrigues and S M Murnal are the other office-bearers of the association. Sanitation is being given the topmost priority with drains being cleaned and garbage dumped at road intersections being cleared. Association secretary Mallikarjun Shetty has said that they have been charging residents Rs 400 annually and outsourced sanitation works. "We have stopped paying the Belgaum City Corporation people who come for collecting money every month for collecting garbage," he added.
